  • Course Syllabus

  • Description: MATH 1040 and MATH 1070 together form the year-long calculus sequence. This sequence introduces the fundamentals of single-variable calculus for modeling phenomena in engineering and science. MATH 1040 includes a review of pre-calculus and algebra, as well as topics such as limits, continuity, and an introduction to differential calculus. When combined, MATH 1040 and MATH 1070 cover the same material as MATH 1060.

  • This course requires Edfinity for online homework. You can access Edfinity through your Canvas course. You can purchase Edfinity access either directly from Edfinity's website or by buying an access code from the bookstore. Please note that purchasing through the bookstore will be more expensive than buying directly from Edfinity.

  • Textbook: Calculus: Early Transcendentals, 3rd edition, by Briggs, Cochran, Gillett, and Schulz.
    • Options to access the textbook
      1. Purchase the loose-leaf textbook from the Clemson University bookstore
      2. E-book: Access the e-text through Pearson+.
      3. Clemson Libraries has copies of the required class textbook, Calculus: Early Transcendentals, Single Variable (3rd edition, 2019). The books can be checked out at the library's main circulation desk. Students can check them out for 4 hours at a time and renew them if no one else has a hold on them.

        2. The Library also has copies of textbooks for many other courses available through its Textbook Lending Program, and it encourages you to review the works at this link.

Bonus Opportunities

To promote the review of prerequisite skills and the early use of out-of-class resources, you have the opportunity to earn up to 1 bonus point toward your course average. Specific dates will be announced on the MATH 1070 course website and through Canvas announcements. Each participation will be worth 0.25 points, for a maximum of 1 point.

  1. Attending Math 1070/1080 Review Sessions (max 0.50 pt)
    • We are combining sessions with MATH 1080 because it also covers Pre-Calculus, limits, and derivatives for Calculus II. Since MATH 1070 heavily relies on Pre-Calculus skills, we strongly encourage you to attend the following session. More details will be provided by your instructor. (Available Sessions Specific Schedule will be posted below).
  2. Attending the drop-in Math Help Center (max 0.5 pt)
    • Credit Available Dates: Monday, August 31 and Friday, September 11.
    • You can earn credit for this option up to 2 times.
    • Refer to the Math Help Lab schedule below for the schedule of our MATH 1070 TAs.
  3. Attending the PAL sessions (max 0.5 pt)
    • Credit Available Dates: Monday, August 31 and Sunday, September 13.
    • You can earn credit for this option up to 2 times.
    • Refer to the available PAL sessions below.
  4. Meeting with your instructor (max 0.75 pt)
    • Credit Available Dates: By Friday, September 11
    • You can earn credit for this option up to 3 times.
